God Sings Through Me

God Sings Through Me oversized teeRN Brand recently released its latest addition to the inspirational collection of Christian t-shirts.  The God Sings Through Me oversized tee for women and dark heather gray v-neck for me began shipping to the public Stellar Awards weekend.

I had been wanting to create a design with God Sings Through Me but the concept just never came together in my head.  I had recently collaborated with Gospel Central’s Michael Stewart, designing the Gospel Central logo and the next thing I knew, I had a concept for the God Sings Through Me shirt.  The words God Sings Through Me were inspired by my late cousin Kimberly Walton.  She loved to sing.

Domestic Violence: James Fortune Arrested For Striking His Wife With A Barstool

James FortuneOn October 23rd, it was reported that Grammy nominated gospel singer James Fortune was arrested for assault against a family member.  The details surrounding the situation were vague not letting on to who Fortune had assaulted.  Fortune was released the next day posting a $20,000 bond.  Since the news first broke more details are being reported and identifying the victim as Fortune’s wife.  He is being charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.  The details are also stating that Fortune’s wife may have suffered from a broken or fractured leg or pelvis after bring struck with a barstool.  You can read more here

As a domestic violence advocate, I often say that domestic violence does not discriminate against one’s faith, gender, socioeconomic status, sexuality or age.  I am sure that quite a few people also wonder why I always have a Pastor on the My Scars Chat panel discussion.  I think it is very important for the faith community to be equipped in handling domestic violence and also connected to the domestic violence organizations in their community.  We can not turn a deaf ear or blind eye to those within the pews or in the pulpit because of the title they carry when someone’s life could be in danger.

I pray the James Fortune gets the help that he needs and that his family can also begin the healing process.  You never know how long this may have been going on but I pray for his wife that she finds strength and peace to carry on.  No one should ever be subjected to such treatment.  If you know someone that may be experiencing domestic violence, please do not hesitate to reach out and encourage them to seek the necessary help, prayer is always needed but a way of escape can save a life.

I want to share some of the lyrics of Fortune’s song Identity:

Sitting here alone thinking of you
I’m blown away
You never gave up on me
Time after time I let you down
So caught up and focused on me
My own desires get in the way
I should be finding my purpose in you
So I can be what you have for me

[Pre Chorus:]
I need you to search me oh God,
I want to be just like you
So that you can be seen when they see me

[Verse 2:]
You know my thoughts
You know my heart
Along the way I’ve made mistakes
But thank you for grace
Hiding my flaws so they can see you

[Chorus:]
Lord I want to change
Take it away whatever it is
That’s my desire
I want your heart

These words sound like the sentiments of Fortune’s prayer.  Sometimes God has to expose our hearts in order to heal them.

Le’Andria Johnson Showing Her Scars

Le'Andria Johnson

A week ago today, I boarded a flight headed to Atlanta, GA.  I did not know what to expect.  I actually hadn’t even taken any time to really think about what I was embarking on.  I was flying out to meet with thee Le’Andria Johnson.  Now if you know me, then you know I have been a fan/supporter since day 1.  Le’Andria Johnson was first introduced to us all on season 3 of BET’s Sunday Best.  She has since gone on to win a Grammy and two Stellar Awards.  So how would it happen that I would be going out to meet with her?  I still don’t have the answer to that but I will say it was nobody but God.

I was picked up from the airport by Robert Hatcher, Johnson’s road manager and it was like we had known each other for quite some time.  We grabbed a bite to eat from Waffle House (I need a waffle on this morning, lol).  He didn’t bother to let me know that we would be meeting with Le’Andria moments later.  We finished eating and drove over to IPC Ministries.  If you do not know, Le’Andria actually Pastor Le’Andria Johnson began a ministry a few months ago in Hapeville, GA.  We were meeting to discuss the expansion of IPC Ministries to Las Vegas, NV.  It was also during that initial meeting that Johnson would show her scars.  We discussed music, ministry and transparency.

My first question was how are you able to be so transparent and open about your life? Johnson’s response, “Being transparent is the key to someone’s locked door”.  Johnson went on to discuss life after Sunday’s Best and how she was still in a place of not surrendering her all to God.  “I did what I needed to do to stay sane and that’s operate in a church and still give God some of me.  On Sundays, that was my only grace period, my only way out.  That was my way of saying Lord forgive me for the week.  I’m coming to sing for you, shout for you and dance for you.  And I was doing it from a pure heart then.  But I didn’t realize the effect that it would have on me and the people around me.”

It was during that time that God began to deal with Le’Andria.  If you recall, Johnson began to share her testimony of being delivered from alcohol.  Soon after, she would let close friends and family know that she was expecting her 4th child out of wedlock.  It was suggested by some for her to have an abortion.  Her record label, Music World operated by Matthew Knowles,  told her it was career suicide to carry the baby.  Johnson was fully persuaded that she would not abort her baby but allow God to use the very thing that man tried to kill her with as a testimony.  “I did not kill to be killed” became one of Johnson’s slogans during that time.  If you recall my post titled Le’Andria Johnson: Sooner or Later, I could see then what God was doing through her and the pregnancy.  I then asked Johnson, “How were you able to stand and endure during those times?”  I knew it was nobody but God but her response was confirmation.  “He was my strength.  He said I’ll never leave you nor forsake you.  God I know that you forgave me and if you forgave me, you’re telling me to move on.  But I knew there were millions of Le’Andria’s in the world.”  I thank God that she was able to stand and that He was her strength.   “Those scars were for you to go through because you were going to be strong enough to tell someone else how to get out of it”, said Johnson.  Now that is what showing our scars is all about.

Johnson is currently working on her upcoming single and album and quite a few other projects.  She recently recorded a song with Reuben Studdard that is soon to be released and she can be heard on many other albums of some of your favorite gospel artist.  However, right now Johnson’s heart is in ministry.  She is reaching out to the unchurched or those that have given up on the church in unconventional ways.  If you are in the Las Vegas, NV area you can pick up a complete copy of the interview in The Answer Newspaper.  Also, if you are interested in finding out more about IPC Ministries or being a part of the Las Vegas location please send an email to rn @ rhachellenicol (dot) com.  Continue to keep Pastor Le’Andria Johnson in your prayers as she continues to impact lives and minister.   “We’re in the same boat with our messed up, imperfect selves but we have one thing in common, the tree of life, an all access pass to God.”

Reset: New Album by Isaac Carree

isaac-carree-300x208I have been anticipating the release of Isaac Carree”s solo Sophomore album, since the release of the single Clean This House.  Isaac Carree, Reset, the title of the Sophmore album will be available in stores on June 25, 2013.  If you follow the award-winning artist on Social Cam then you have had the pleasure of hearing some snippets on Music Mondays.  Today a snippet of Paradise was shared with followers.   He also shares the inspiration behind the title of the album, “Just when you were ready to throw in the towel and give up, you can just reach over there and press that reset button and start all over again.  It’s never too late to begin again”.

I think we have all been in that place before.   The album will also feature guest appearances from Le’Andria Johnson, Kierra Sheard and James Fortune.  Here are some of the lyrics from Paradise:

“Everybody wants to go there but nobody wants to die.  So if you want to see Him, you gotta live this life right.  Nothing is for certain but this one things for sure, we’re all going to leave here, I pray I make it through them doors…can’t wait to get to paradise, can’t wait to get to paradise.”  Take a listen here and keep visiting social cam for the latest on Music Mondays from Isaac Carree.

Mary Mary:Coming Back For Season Three

While we may not know the future of the singing duo Mary Mary, we will definitely get another season to witness Erica and Tina’s life behind the scenes.  The Mary Mary reality show will be back for a season 3 on WE tv.  Reaching 5.2 million viewers this season, it is no surprise that they will be back.  The duo will begin filming for season 3 Mid-March.

marymaryrealityshow

I was excited to hear this news.  It seemed like the sisters got a lot more comfortable  with being filmed during season 2. So much happened during this season.  From babies to weddings and semi-proposals, life was moving fast.  So fast, that with a career as demanding as theirs, I don’t blame Tina for wanting to take a break or even GooGoo wanting to run for cover in Atlanta.  Erica and Tina appear to manage their careers and personal lives very different.

I think Mitch’s suggestion of re-engaging in counseling is a great idea.  I also think that even taking a break for a little while is a great idea.  Those last few moments of season 2 shed some light on communication.  The way we communicate with one another can be a deal breaker in any relationship whether siblings, spouses, employer-employee or parent-to-child.  Although, I love the bluntness of Tina, I don’t think I could deal with it as a sister or a business partner.

Who has been your favorite sister to watch?

Marvin Sapp Questioned About Recording ‘Stay Prayed Up’

Thirsty (Marvin Sapp album)

Thirsty (Marvin Sapp album) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

It was only a matter of time before Pastor Marvin Sapp would be questioned about his motivation for recording a gospel song with Kandi Burruss.  Even before the release of the single, ‘Stay Prayed Up’, Kandi Burruss released a statement saying that she was expecting the backlash because of the work that she does.   Burruss is the owner of an adult sex toy line, Kandi Factory, and a late night adult talk show, Kandi Koated Nights.  So why would a Pastor and well known gospel artist like Marvin Sapp team up with Burruss?  Here is what his response was:

Please read my only response to the song “Stay Prayed Up”

Mr Sapp, I was a big fan of yours however as a Christian I’m a bit confused about your motivation to record the record prayed up. I intentionally watched you on the HOA and was taken back by your conversation with Kandi at the studio. You continued to tell her not to try to explain herself, and that she didn’t have to apologize etc. I’m just wondering is this the watered down version of the word you are teaching in your church? The bible says “my people perish because of a lack of knowledge.” It also says “GOD would rather that we be hot or cold.” Not trying to come off as judgmental but this is the type of thing that makes the church look no different than the world. So fed up with this new concept of stooping to the worlds standards to reach souls Jesus hung out in places with sinners to reach them but HE never comprised GIS standards nor GOD’s word. Kandi is motivated by money just wondering what’s your motivation?

Usually I don’t respond to people about things like this however I must this time. The problem with many in the church is 1.) that we major in minors and 2.) ignorant (not well studied) of scripture. Lets deal with the first, This woman who was an ex R&B singer that sells sex toys and live with her man decided on a show that reaches 10 million viewers per showing (believers and unbelievers) to sing about,,,, Not sex toys, drugs or living with a man but PRAYER!!!!!! and the saints are upset. The lyric says, “I stay prayed up, that gets me by, that how I made it through my darkest time, see I’m a sinner and thats no lie, but thank God my prayers are heard because he knows I try” Wow!!!!! nothing elicit or comprising about the lyric…. So lets look at how Jesus dealt with the sinner….. From my study of scripture the only people he checked was the church (religious people of that day) however the sinner he consistently showed COMPASSION!!!!!!! Examples…… Woman caught in the ACT of adultery Also the Woman at the well……. Never exposed them publicly, dealt with them privately. We as believer major in minors…… So caught up in the messenger that we are missing the message “Staying Prayed UP”. Now I close with this…Everyone that God used in scripture was flawed and or had struggles…. Let me call the roll….. Moses was a murderer, Rahab was a harlet (whore), David was a murder/adulter and still considered a man after Gods own heart, Peter was a cutting cusser however was in the inner circle of Jesus, Paul was a murderer and made many blaspheme against God however wrote 2/3 of the NT, He spoke through a Donkey and if we decide to be quite rocks will cry out… We say we are christians which means being Christ-like but question peoples motives that model his behavior….The bible speaks about witnessing and that you need to be wise to win souls and Paul says I became all things to all men that I might win some…. Compromise was never done here nor do I condone her life style or life choices and keeping 100 you don’t know the off camera conversation we had. Again big picture 10 million people at 1 time were challenged to PRAY in difficult times WOW!!!! Thats Awesome and Ministy….. PS Didn’t spell check because I’m late to a meeting…. Be Blessed

In spite of all the backlash, since the release of the album on both iTunes and Amazon it has risen to the #1 spot in the Contemporary Gospel category.
