African American girls learn to love the skin their in
Wichita, Kan. – On March 19, 2012, twelve girls from Youthville foster care agency will be taught how to properly care for their Afro-textured hair and beautiful skin. The event will serve as a kick-off to Born Beautiful, a mentoring group for girls in the Wichita Metro Area. This group is sponsored by the women’s empowerment weblog NotoriousSHE.com and it is our goal to reaffirm young girls that they are beautiful, brilliant, powerful and resilient.
“Our hope is to gift each younger girl with a copy of the children’s book, Happy to Be Nappy by bell hooks, and each older girl with a copy of Born Beautiful: The African American Teenager’s Complete Guide to Beauty by Alfred Fornay.” says Aonya Kendrick-Barnett, Born Beautiful organizer.
“The girls will receive a beauty basics starter kit which will include hair, skin and toiletry necessities such as shampoo, conditioner and lotion. They will also receive complimentary styling and manicurist services courtesy of Salon Simplicity.”
Much of the initial success of this event can be contributed social media. In less than a week, the Facebook and Twitter community helped Born Beautiful reach its $300 goal through online donations. The money raised will cover the aforementioned items that will be gifted to the girls. Still, Born Beautiful will continue to accept online donations, as well as, gift cards and haircare products which will be donated Youthville.
Your coverage is requested to help us continue to spread the word. Born Beautiful will commence at 9 a.m. on Monday, March 19, 2012. Co-sponsors include MiniSkirtMama, Privè ICT, Salon Simplicity and Walmart Super Center.
