It was only a matter of time before Pastor Marvin Sapp would be questioned about his motivation for recording a gospel song with Kandi Burruss.  Even before the release of the single, ‘Stay Prayed Up’, Kandi Burruss released a statement saying that she was expecting the backlash because of the work that she does.   Burruss is the owner of an adult sex toy line, Kandi Factory, and a late night adult talk show, Kandi Koated Nights.  So why would a Pastor and well known gospel artist like Marvin Sapp team up with Burruss?  Here is what his response was:

Please read my only response to the song “Stay Prayed Up”

Mr Sapp, I was a big fan of yours however as a Christian I’m a bit confused about your motivation to record the record prayed up. I intentionally watched you on the HOA and was taken back by your conversation with Kandi at the studio. You continued to tell her not to try to explain herself, and that she didn’t have to apologize etc. I’m just wondering is this the watered down version of the word you are teaching in your church? The bible says “my people perish because of a lack of knowledge.” It also says “GOD would rather that we be hot or cold.” Not trying to come off as judgmental but this is the type of thing that makes the church look no different than the world. So fed up with this new concept of stooping to the worlds standards to reach souls Jesus hung out in places with sinners to reach them but HE never comprised GIS standards nor GOD’s word. Kandi is motivated by money just wondering what’s your motivation?

Usually I don’t respond to people about things like this however I must this time. The problem with many in the church is 1.) that we major in minors and 2.) ignorant (not well studied) of scripture. Lets deal with the first, This woman who was an ex R&B singer that sells sex toys and live with her man decided on a show that reaches 10 million viewers per showing (believers and unbelievers) to sing about,,,, Not sex toys, drugs or living with a man but PRAYER!!!!!! and the saints are upset. The lyric says, “I stay prayed up, that gets me by, that how I made it through my darkest time, see I’m a sinner and thats no lie, but thank God my prayers are heard because he knows I try” Wow!!!!! nothing elicit or comprising about the lyric…. So lets look at how Jesus dealt with the sinner….. From my study of scripture the only people he checked was the church (religious people of that day) however the sinner he consistently showed COMPASSION!!!!!!! Examples…… Woman caught in the ACT of adultery Also the Woman at the well……. Never exposed them publicly, dealt with them privately. We as believer major in minors…… So caught up in the messenger that we are missing the message “Staying Prayed UP”. Now I close with this…Everyone that God used in scripture was flawed and or had struggles…. Let me call the roll….. Moses was a murderer, Rahab was a harlet (whore), David was a murder/adulter and still considered a man after Gods own heart, Peter was a cutting cusser however was in the inner circle of Jesus, Paul was a murderer and made many blaspheme against God however wrote 2/3 of the NT, He spoke through a Donkey and if we decide to be quite rocks will cry out… We say we are christians which means being Christ-like but question peoples motives that model his behavior….The bible speaks about witnessing and that you need to be wise to win souls and Paul says I became all things to all men that I might win some…. Compromise was never done here nor do I condone her life style or life choices and keeping 100 you don’t know the off camera conversation we had. Again big picture 10 million people at 1 time were challenged to PRAY in difficult times WOW!!!! Thats Awesome and Ministy….. PS Didn’t spell check because I’m late to a meeting…. Be Blessed

In spite of all the backlash, since the release of the album on both iTunes and Amazon it has risen to the #1 spot in the Contemporary Gospel category.

  1. Beautiful song, but I love the concept of it. I was shock when I saw they had a song together. Thank you for sharing the post. I was planning on sharing the song on my blog. I still plan on sharing. God Bless 🙂

    • I think we were all a little shocked. I definitely understand and can appreciate the message and concept of the song but just like with every other genre of music, you have a preference. I have listened to it a few times but I am in no rush to add it to my iTunes. Lol

  2. You know… Kandi sells sex toys as a business. Why is there an assumption that christian married couples don’t use sex toys or other “novelties” to enhance their intimacy in the bed? The marriage bed is undefiled is what the word says…

People are quick to judge Kandi on what they know about her personal life, but remembering that is information she chose to expose to the world by allowing the cameras in. There are many people that folks in the church have up on a pedestal that don’t deserve to be there- and if they were BOLD enough to air their life to the public would probably lose their positions and respect. Jesus came not to condemn the world, but to save it… so who are we to condemn. We all have a testimony, skeletons we’ve tried to burn, and dirty little secrets we’d rather not be reminded of… let people live and minister the way they want to- just pray the Spirit is in it.

Years ago, I went to a retreat for evangelists. there was a family there… very Goth looking, colored spiked hair, tattoos, and piercings everywhere…dressed in all black. they had their two small children there with them. My first thought was “I KNOW they aren’t here with us!” Well I was wrong… these people had come out of a dark subculture to find Jesus. They LOVED the Lord and they worshipped , and sang and prayed with us and my heart toward them was changed. I had to ask why they still dressed the way they did since they’ve been changed. Their response opened my Eyes and the Lord allowed that to be a teachable moment for me. They knew the gothic/metal subculture very well, and knew the people in that community wouldn’t be receptive to hearing their testimony once “cleaned up” so they kept their look, but their hearts were changed. God looks at the heart, not the superficial things we look at. He wants those willing to be used…and when they explained it to me, it made sense. God has a way of using anyone who wants to be used to spread his message of love…there are many people who will never walk into a church, never seek out a church, or a minister, but they looking to be loved and accepted right where they are at- piercings, sex toys, fornicating and all… and God will use those willing to be used- regardless of who thinks what about it.

    • Brazen, I really think that we are getting to a point in time where the “church” has become full of pride and instead of recognizing that it is turning more people away than drawing them in, fingers continue to be pointed.

I know I have said many prayers during some of the hardest times in my life hoping and believing that God heard each and every one of them regardless of the life that I was living. Which is another reason that I am so open to share my own testimony.

The fact of the matter is, with the release of this song, just like Marvin Sapp stated, millions of people were challenged to pray.

      • Agreed! When i was disobedient and at my worst, I prayed…. and from that moment God opened my eyes… I know you relate. 🙂 We have to stop looking down on people and thinking we’re better than anyone… we just initiated a relationship with Christ sooner than others… doesn’t make us better. At our best we are but Filthy rags… the late Malinda P. Sapp reminded me of that often. 🙂

  3. I completely agree with the fact that we all have “issues” in our lives that we must pray about and believe God to heal for us. However, my concern is that according to scripture there is a definitive line between what is Holy and what is unholy. What I’m seeing today is the human tendency to “muddy the waters” because we know we live under God’s grace. When I was living a lifestyle that was “blatantly and knowingly” unpleasing to God, I still had a heart and desire for HIm. However, I knew that I had to make a choice. I could not have two spiritual masters. Conviction was a daily experience, so I made a choice. I think we are making it too easy for people to continue in sin by simply saying that their “words” show that they love God.

    • I agree but the only thing is that we can only plant the seeds. God is the one who ultimately brings about conviction and saves. We can only hope that we are sharing the message that He is calling us to share. I think sometimes we can judge a person before their time or season. This may have been the first step in God changing her life drastically. After the woman at the well left saying “come see a man’, I am sure there were still some things that needed fixing at home.

Pastor Marvin also stated that conversations were exchanged off camera.
